Guys, we’ve got to talk about web accessibility.

I get it: the corporate web is bland and sterile. The vintage 90s/00s look that’s popular with a lot of web revival hobbyists is a reaction to the impersonal, un-customizable user profiles of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. … but we have to be able to strike a balance between “we’re all having fun here” and “you gave Meep a migraine (again).”
There’s a lot I miss about the good/bad old Geocities/Expage/MySpace days (or I wouldn’t be here, right?) but we left zillions of blinking/flashing/moving images and autoplaying music behind for a reason. It is physically painful for me to browse sites with a lot of moving images and autoplay music activates my startle response (neurodivergent:ADHD/PTSD).
I’m not perfect (count the images without alt text on my pages if you’ve got nothing better to do) but if we believe that the web is for everybody - if, like Neocities says, “the web is yours” - it has to be accessible.
